Cows of Rishikesh

It was on my first trip to India for a Yoga Teacher’s Training Course that I encountered the cows. Even if you’ve never been to India, I’m pretty sure you’ve heard about the holy cows that live on the streets at their leisure. Nothing can really quite prepare you for the casual amount of cows that block entrances to shops, pay visits to the vegetable sellers, cause traffic jams and slowly saunter down the hot streets. It’s not unusual to have to walk past nearby a massive bull lying along the roadside or see slim calves chewing colourful election posters off the walls – during Holi, they’re often sporting bright colours. They’re generally very well behaved, are interested in any kind of food (it’s the cows you have to watch out for, not the dogs) and love a scratch behind the ears.
