Situated on and around the Nore River is the quaint city of Kilkenny (it’s a small city, but not a town). It’s two hours north-east of Cork on the M8 and coming from Dublin, it’s just 100km away.
The main attraction is surely the castle, but there are plenty of other attractions in and around the city to visit as well. A few to aim for are St. Canice’s Cathedral and round tower, Rothe House, the Shee Alms House, Black Abbey, the town hall, St. Francis Abbey, Grace’s Castle, St. John’s Priory and St. Mary’s Cathedral. The town is a famous brewing centre and is also known as a centre for crafts and design. A bit further afield is Dunmore Cave, Castlecomer Discovery Park, Jerpoint Abbey and the Woodstock Gardens and Arboretum. There are many woods around the town in which to enjoy long and short nature walks as well.
